Sustainable Urban Agriculture Internship at e3garden

ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION
e3garden values the benefits of creating an something that adheres to the demands of the Triple Bottom Line: Profits, Planet, People. Our mission also is to provide educational opportunities to learn more about sustainability, the value chain for food production and urban farming methods. e3garden produces great tasting fresh vegetables using urban farming techniques, renewable energy production, and sustainable methods. Most of our growing is done using hydroponic methods.  e3garden is located in the Philadelphia Metro area.

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES
Interns work directly under the supervision of the founder and CEO of the company.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES
• Germination, Production and Harvesting
• Planning and Design
• Data Collection and Analysis
• Record Keeping
• Marketing and Sales (as needed)

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Candidates must be at least 18 years of age. Ability to lift 40 lbs. Candidate must supply a completed application, a resume and (2) letters of reference.

QUALIFICATIONS DESIRED
• Excellent communication skills and the ability to accept supervision and guidance.
• Experience or skills in any of the following: farms and gardens, natural history, ecology, sustainability, hydroponics, aquaponics, controlled environment agriculture, composting, permaculture, landscape design, plant science, construction methods, data collection and research methods.
• Ability to work with hands, word processing, spreadsheets, presentations
• Other characteristics: integrity, commitment, communicates well verbally and orally, organized
• Professional Certifications: food and agricultural certifications a plus.
• A valid driver’s license with a clean driving record with no major infractions.
• LinkedIn profile a plus.

EDUCATIONAL AND OTHER BENEFITS

• Hydroponic germination, production, harvesting, management
• Indoor as well as outdoor hydroponic systems
• Plant nutrient requirements
• The impact of lighting and wave-length on plant development
• The cost-benefits of controlled environment agriculture
• Solar power and its incorporation into agricultural production
• Sustainability and the Triple Bottom Line
• The business side of farming: business models, operations, cost-benefit, pricing, client management, marketing, sales
• The grant process
• How to conduct research studies.
• Organizations such as PASA (includes some member benefits), Sustainable Business Network of Philadelphia (SBN), PA Preferred, Local Harvest.

TERMS OF INTERNSHIP
• This position is a part-time position.
• Number of hours per week: 5-10. Schedule to be determined.
• A stipend may be available based on need and qualifications
• e3garden is a non-smoking environment.
